Product Photography – It is all in the details.
Every manufacturer of products great and small must have their product photographed for a variety of uses: catalogs, instruction manuals, advertising, branding and marketing just to name a few.
The amount of money spent on product photography probably ranges from millions of dollars for large corporations and a couple hundred for a local business maybe looking to launch a new website.
Put simply a product’s still photo will most likely be the first view to that potential new customer. Now let me ask the question – Do you want your product’s first impression to be less than perfect? What will attract more new customers: sharp, beautifully lighted high quality images or something taken with your smartphone?
Three of my recent product photography shoot included: a smokeless cigarette that involved macro photography of the small cigarette’s components for an e-commerce website, a clothing line of golf apparel for catalog, brochure and online marketing, and an ice sculpture for the company’s ice sculpture molds packaging. Each shoot presented its own set of product photography challenges.
The smokeless cigarette required close-up macro photography of its component parts.
The apparel shoot for Slate Golf involved photographing a model wearing the golf shirt from several angles all matching to display the shirt’s front and back against a solid white background.
The ice sculpture for Sculptures in Ice involved creating a contrast background with the focus on the ice sculpture that was slowing changing it’s texture as it melted. I also photographed the mold form product with a chocolate product.
Every product shoot requires some planning to execute the images that the client requires for their needs. Sometimes a shoot evolves during the studio shoot to the reach an images that satisfies a client’s needs.
