You are engaged. And so the planning begins.
You’ve grabbed several copies of the bridal magazines. You’ve begun looking at the vendors you will need. And you’re starting to dive deeper into the planning phase. What’s next?
It may be time for an engagement portrait.
An engagement portrait can provide you with a beautiful photograph to use as you announce your engagement, as you spread the good news on Facebook, or even as you create your invitations. And while its easy to think of your engagement portrait as a simple service, it really is so much more. It’s a time for you to select a great photographer and “interview” him in hopes he’ll also make a great wedding photographer.

When you have your photo session with your photographer, have it in a relaxed environment. Yes, these are engagement photos and they are important – but you want a chance to bond with your photographer. How does he work with you in a non-stressed situation? What ideas does he have as you move around for different poses?
Talk to your photographer – encourage an open line of communication. You want your photographer to feel comfortable telling you what poses to strike. You want to learn how to move and what he means as he directs you into different poses. If you find it difficult to talk to your photographer for these photos, you will probably find it difficult on your wedding day. Take this time to be sociable and really get the communication flowing.

After you have received your proofs, pay close attention to the details. Remember, this is a good representation of the photos you can expect from your wedding. Do you like the feel of each photo? Do they convey emotions? Are the poses too stiff? Did your photographer utilize natural light when possible?
In short, make sure that your engagement portraits are perfect – it is a safe bet that your wedding photos will be perfect, too.
